Two types of Intuition

If planning to develop your intuitive abilities, firstly you need to decide which type of intuition you want to strengthen. There are basically two types of intuition, animal and spiritual. It is important to distinguish between the two if you plan to develop your spiritual intuition.

Animal Intuition.

Animal intuition takes the form of instinct, gut feelings and hunches. Animals use this intuition in order to survive. Humans are born with this intuition and it is easily developed. Because it is survival based, it is not an effective tool for everyday decision making, as most decisions do not affect our survival.

Regularly taking a moment to become aware of your physical body connects you with your animal intuition. When there is confusion or fear in your physical body, your instincts may be alerting you to danger or to a misrepresented situation. People who are physical or earthy by nature, such as athletes, sports people and those who engage in manual labour usually find it easy to access animal intuition as these people usually have a strong natural connection with the physical body.

Spiritual intuition.

Spiritual intuition requires that you listen to your soul or psyche, in order to glean from that part of yourself, which is the best path to take. This cannot be effectively done until you still your mind and disengage from the demands and distractions of your immediate environment.

When you become highly skilled at using your spiritual intuition, you can remain in the present, acutely aware of your surroundings, in touch with that spiritual part of yourself which can guide you towards a fulfilling life. Those who can remain continuously in this state are said to be in a state of enlightenment.

Spiritual intuition requires more effort to develop, especially with the everyday demands of the modern world. This form of intuition is more accurate, more complex and more easily rendered ineffective if you are filled with fears, desires or feeling pressured by circumstances.

While animal intuition can give a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer to a clear question, spiritual intuition can help you to understand why a particular path is unsuitable. Spiritual intuition can be employed to examine complex issues such as

  • why a past love relationship didn’t work.
  • the underlying causes of physical health issues.
  • what attitudes or actions are currently preventing you from succeeding in life.
  • if the time is right to change careers.
  • if you might succeed more rapidly in another country or location.
  • if a financial or emotional investment will yield positive results.

Some basic tools for developing spiritual intuition include the following.

  • Meditation.
  • Yoga or gentle physical exercise.
  • Techniques to quiet the mind in order to hear the small voice within.
  • Practising using your intuition at every opportunity.

Meditation techniques vary so it is necessary to find a technique which works well for you. With practice meditation is a tried and tested method of stilling the mind in order to listen to your intuition.

Yoga or gentle physical exercise such as stretching, helps to release tension. This in turn allows the mind to become centred and focussed. You can then direct your focus within, to hear or sense your intuition.

Practising using your intuition in everyday situations helps to strengthen and develop intuitive abilities. Like building muscle, strengthening intuition needs to be an everyday activity. It can take the form of guessing who is on the phone, how many letter you’ll receive today or how many messages have been left on your telephone answering machine or your voice-mail. A few weeks after Christmas last year I was ‘guessing’ how many letter were in the letterbox and it occurred to me that there was a postcard from Europe. Sure enough when I opened the mailbox there was a postcard from Sweden from a friend.

Treating intuitive development as a game can make it easier to accept when you are wrong in your ‘guessing’. Just like a game, you shrug off your inaccuracy and try again. As you begin your psychic development, instead of aiming for 100% accuracy and then feeling dejected when you don’t achieve your goal, allow yourself to get it wrong for awhile.

If you aim for only 5% accuracy and build from there, then each time you are correct your confidence will grow. Each time you are wrong, you won’t feel dejected as you’ll remember your target is only 5%. Gradually increase desired accuracy levels, as your skills develop.
